Introduction

It's hard not to notice this stunning two-storey home, with black cedar exterior and stylish all-white interior, complete with smart wiring. The home sits on a cement slab over workshop-storage space and a self-contained studio apartment used as an office.

Designer, Dane Richardson, has been putting smart wiring into buildings for around ten years, so it made perfect sense to put it into his own home.

"From having it in my own home I am well informed about what works well and what doesn't and am in a good position to advise my clients," he says.

"If you want a home automation system to work well, the quality of install is essential. The different components of your system must be able to talk to each other and if something breaks down you want reputable technical support.

"We also discovered through experience that if you have children, make sure your system is robust enough to stand constant pressing of buttons!"
