Smart Wiring on Display in Sydney

Interest in Smart Wiring by consumers and trades is at an all time high.

Interest in Smart Wiring by consumers and trades is at an all time high.

That's the message from the HIA Home Ideas Show 2009, held recently at the Sydney Exhibition and Convention Centre.

The expo showcased the latest innovations in home design, building and renovation products. The Smart Wired information stand generated much interest, with thousands of information brochures given out to interested trade and public.

Smart Wired designer Lee Vaughan was on hand to offer advice on Smart Wiring and how to make the best use of connected home technology.

"The level of interest was really high and I spoke to many architects and builders who were looking to get involved in this area. We also had a lot of home builders and electricians come through the exhibit keen to find out more about Smart Wiring and what it does."

Lee has been involved in the electrical business for long enough to know that Smart Wiring is here to stay. His business, EBM Home Automation Systems, has been operating since 1994 and is part of family-owned Vaughan Electrical Pty Ltd, which opened in 1979.

In the early days he acknowledges there was not a lot of knowledge about Smart Wiring, and even fewer people willing to pay top dollar to put it in their homes. Now he runs a thriving business that consults with architects and builders to oversee the installation of both automation and telecommunication services in new homes.

Much of his work is on-site with the builder's electrician, training them up in Smart Wiring and project managing them through the job. "When an electrician hasn't had much involvement in Smart Wiring we give him a helping hand, with us doing all the design work, CAD drawings, programming and specifications," explains Lee.

"At the end of a project we have an electrician that is trained in automation, and over the last five years these electricians have been getting Smart Wiring jobs and asking us to take on the design and management while they do the wiring. We work directly with the client - ensuring the project is on time and to budget - and this has become a large part of our business."
