Builders Survey

More people smart wire ? their homes in Victoria than any other state. This is just one of the findings from a new Copper Development Centre and Housing Industry Australia study.

The survey of 680 of Australia's largest home building companies shows that an increasing number of builders (95%) are aware of smart wiring and over a quarter of all new homes are now smart wired.

The survey was conducted in August 2007 and follows on from similar surveys in 2001, 2004 and 2006. It demonstrates that smart wiring uptake has doubled in just three years, and in some states like Victoria it is now approaching a third of all new homes.

Results from the survey include:

- A strong increase in the awareness of smart wiring among Australia's largest builders. Awareness in 2007 has reached 95%, up 2% on 2006 and 26% on 2001.

- A solid increase in the uptake of some form of smart wiring new homes in all states. Currently it is estimated that 26% of new homes have some sort of smart wiring installed, up 15% on 2004. The highest level of smart wiring uptake was in Victoria, up 17% on 2004 to 29 per cent, while the lowest uptake is in South Australia at 19%.

- An increase in smart wiring in all categories except audio distribution. The most common feature that customers seek remains telephone/internet (up from 91% to 95%), followed by TV distribution. In third place was multiple data outlets which has experienced a very solid increase in customers seeking this feature.

- A lack of advertising or promotion of smart wiring among builders. Eight per cent don?t offer smart wiring on the homes they build, 56% said that it was available if the homeowner asked and 36% has it as a standard feature or as a listed optional extra.
