Beam me up on copper... OK Adelaide will do
When I saw that Telstra had used hologram technology
to beam their Chief Technology Officer live into Adelaide from Melbourne for a meeting, I sat up and took notice. And I suspect I wasn't the only one.
Not that I was taken by surprise by the fact of the technology itself, but when it actually happened it still felt more sci-fi than real life.
It also felt exciting I have to say, as it confirms the boundless possibilities that technology keeps opening up for all of us. It also confirmed the key role that copper will have even as technology keeps re-inventing itself.
Telstra achieved this over their high speed network using the MusionR EyelinerTM, Systema high definition holographic video projection system that allows three-dimensional moving images to appear within a live stage setting.
And lets face it, it could only have been done over copper. Wireless-and don't get me wrong I love it for all its faults-is still prone to noise, interruptions, transitory interference and drop outs. And I don't see that changing any time soon.
The beauty about Copper-on which Smart WiringTM is based of course-is that it has well over 350mbs capability on cat 5 and 10gb on cat 6, and now 40-100 gb on cat 7.
There is adequate ceiling space for holography in future for copper, but wireless caps out at 50mbs even over the latest 802.11.n system.
Such a break through has been due for some time and is expected to have a huge impact on the way we'll do business, as well as in areas like health and education where the transmission of large amounts of data is crucial.
Now does this mean I can get Telstra to beam some where sunny next week?
