Renovators Go Green

Home renovators are increasingly looking for ways to make their homes more energy-efficient, according to a recent survey by building advisory service, Archicentre.

The 2008 Climate Change Renovation Trends survey found that renovators recognise the effect of climate change on property values and operating costs. The survey, conducted with architects in every state, shows clients are requesting energy-saving appliances and design measures like smart wiring, energy-efficient lighting, double glazing and solar panels.

"It seems that climate change awareness, the rising costs of energy and water, combined with the realisation that 'green homes' will be more valuable, is having a significant impact on what home owners are including in their renovations", says Archicentre.

In the survey, energy-efficient lighting is requested in 68.5 per cent or renovations and smart wiring in 26.1 per cent. Extra insulation was requested in 84.8 per cent and solar hot water in 81.5 per cent.

Smart lighting can help save you electricity by automatically switching off or dimming lights when not in use. Movement sensors can switch lights off when no one is in the room and light sensors can measure the amount on natural light coming into a room and adjust the artificial light accordingly. Dimming lights by as little as 10 per cent can save around 25 per cent of power usage, yet the naked eye can barely see this change.

In the same way, an automated climate control system can enable you to heat or cool your home with optimal energy efficiency. Every home on average is responsible for 14 tonnes of carbon emissions a year, of which air conditioning/heating contributes to around 24 per cent. Even a small drop in energy use will have significant savings: in fact, just one degree of difference in your heating or cooling can reduce your energy consumption by as much as 10 per cent.
